Call for Participants: The Work Room, a feedback group for writers and filmmakers

Are you an experienced writer, filmmaker, and/or moving image artist looking for ways to connect with others in your field(s), get feedback, and build your creative community?

Lesbian Herstory Archives Coordinator Alexis Clements, a writer and filmmaker who has been making work for over two decades, is hosting a feedback group at the Archives. The idea is to gather a small group of people who have been publishing or presenting their work for at least 5 years. In group meetings we’ll share work in progress, get and give feedback, talk shop, and share space and community with each other.

  • We’ll meet monthly for about a year (give or take), and at the end of that time, we’ll make a zine of our work and launch it at an event at the Archives.
  • Meetings will run for 2 hours and will take place in person at the Lesbian Herstory Archives, around the table in the main work room (hence the name).
  • The first meeting will take place at the Archives on a Wednesday evening in September.
  • The idea is to have the same group of people participate in the group for the full year, so please only apply if you can commit to monthly in-person meetings.
  • The intention is for this to be an intergenerational, multi-racial, and trans-inclusive group.

How to Express Interest in Participating

The Archives space is intimate and unable to accommodate large groups. Also, for a feedback group to work, we can’t be too many. So, with that in mind, it’s not going to be possible to include everyone who might be interested in the group.

If you’d like to be considered for the group, please use this link to fill out a form expressing your interest: https://forms.gle/iuWZeLwJUX52pYSU6

In order to be considered for the group, fill out the form at the link above no later than August 20, 2025.

Accessibility

Meetings will be held on the first floor of the Lesbian Herstory Archives. There is an accessible bathroom and a wheelchair lift to facilitate entry into the building for wheelchair and mobility device users. If you have questions about accessibility for this event please email events@lesbianherstoryarchives.org

Suggested Donation

Participants are encouraged to make a donation of $50 (more if you can / less if you can’t) to help cover a small portion of the operating costs for the Archives. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Why is this in-person instead of remote? Why is it only for experienced writers and filmmakers? Why don’t you open it to everyone?

This group will be meeting in-person because of the intimate nature of the conversations we’ll be having and the desire to build connections in the group. Also, hosting meetings that are simultaneously in-person and remote puts heavy demands on both event hosts and participants, which can reduce the ability to be present during meetings, and so the choice is to stick with in-person only for this group.

It can be disappointing that everyone can’t participate in every event or group. The Archives is all-volunteer organization and has limited capacity. Rather than being deterred by this, adapt this model and host your own feedback group in the way you would prefer and for the people with whom you would like to meet.

No one owns this idea. Take it and make it your own! Host it at home, online, in a library, or a community space near you. Queer spaces exist wherever we make them.
